PAWNEE

It is a hybrid of Mohawk, one of the most productive pecan varieties, and 'Starking Hardy Giant', a cold-resistant and small-fruited variety. It is widely spread in America, mostly in the Northern and Western regions with a slightly drier climate. In the last 20 years, it has been very successful in the southern regions of Turkey, closer to the Mediterranean climate, and is still one of the most planted varieties. It is suitable for many regions of our country that are not extremely cold. It shows excellent performance especially in our Mediterranean, Aegean and Southeastern regions. Pawnee was propagated for the first time in our country in the Tropical Pecan Nut Nursery and started to be distributed to producers. Currently, joint production is carried out with Bandırma Fidan A.Ş. When we started establishing the first Pawnee gardens in 2010, there were only Mahan, Wichita, Choctaw and Western gardens in our country. Unfortunately, with these varieties (except Choctaw), the Pecan industry has not made much progress due to problems such as internal filling in Mahan and difficulty breaking in Wichita and Western. With Pawnee and other varieties we have introduced to the market, as of 2021, demand has completely shifted to easily broken and paper-shelled varieties. The first 10 years are not very productive. It starts to show fruit in the 3-4th year. It has attractive fruits of medium size and golden colour. Their shells are very thin. Internal yield is around 58%, it has brightly colored and very delicious fruits. Number of fruits in 1 kg of shell in Pawnee; If 90-100, the quality is very good, 100-110 is good, 110-120 is medium. You can evaluate the product accordingly. Pawnee does not have as many internal filling problems as in many other varieties. The Pawnee tree tends to grow very rapidly continuously after the first 3 years. It has a high tendency to make narrow-angled branches. Therefore, these branches need to be constantly pruned. Harvest time is earliest (September 4th week). It is very suitable for the coastal regions of the Mediterranean and Aegean. In addition, it can be easily grown in every part of the Marmara region, which has a temperate climate. It is suitable for the western and central parts, except for some parts of the Black Sea region that receive little summer sun. Like the Choctaw, 10% of our own gardens are Pawnee.
